Moth Survey 2021-03-13

Around 22,600 moths call Australia home. They are close relatives of our butterflies in Australis, but only about half are named. Considering that moths play an important role as pollinators and as food source for some of our nocturnal animals (i.e. microbats), a lot of work needs to be done.

Brisbane's Big Butterfly Count's  inaugural round of surveys saw one light trapping event, conducted in cooperation with Bayside Creeks Catchment Group at Melaleuca Environment Park  in Manly West. While these surveys need to be conducted on a regular basis to assemble useful moth data, the results of this one gave a glimpse of our nightly neighbours' diversity and numbers. We will put the spotlight on moths throughout our project..

Follow our activities and find more opportunities to inform yourselves about moths. Please check out the species recorded at the light trapping event here
